Steve Scaffidi and Kristin Brey were joined by Erin Kelly, owner of Kelly’s Greens, to discuss the uncertain future of Wisconsin’s hemp industry as businesses await potential federal and state action. Kelly explained that a provision added to a federal spending bill last fall could effectively ban many hemp-derived products beginning in November, threatening an industry that employs roughly 3,500 people in Wisconsin and generates an estimated $700 million in economic activity. She argued that without state legislation establishing a regulatory framework, many Wisconsin hemp businesses could be forced to close.

Kelly emphasized that responsible hemp businesses have been asking lawmakers for stronger regulations for years, including age restrictions, third-party product testing and clearer labeling standards. Rather than opposing regulation, she said the industry wants rules that protect consumers while allowing legitimate businesses to continue operating. She also noted that recent signals from the White House suggest there may be renewed interest in revisiting the federal hemp ban, though she stressed Wisconsin cannot rely solely on action from Washington.

The conversation also explored the political hurdles facing hemp legislation in Wisconsin. Kelly said previous bipartisan efforts stalled because of disagreements within the Legislature, leaving businesses in limbo as the November deadline approaches. She urged state leaders to begin crafting a long-term plan now rather than waiting until after the election, arguing that Wisconsin has an opportunity to support farmers, consumers, and small businesses while creating a responsible regulatory system.

Before wrapping up, Kelly invited listeners to attend a Save Hemp Rally on Monday, June 29, calling on lawmakers from both parties to prioritize the issue. She said the event is intended to bring together business owners, consumers and community members around a simple message: preserve Wisconsin’s hemp industry while putting commonsense regulations in place.
